Blazers pull away from Trojans to advance in Mac

Ryan Ragland on Jan. 26th, 2012

Top Story Pic
When the bracket seedings came out for the 17th Annual Mid-America Classic in McPherson, many were surprised to see the Blazers with a 9-1 record seeded #4. But when you have three other teams that are undefeated, that will put a one loss team at #4. The Blazers had to open with a 3A Beloit team that was riding a six game winning streak. The Blazers knew they were going to have their hands full with a scrappy Trojan team. The Blazers needed to come out quick and take control of the game, and they were able to do that starting with an 8-0 run, with Molly Porter hitting two quick three-point buckets to start the game. Beloit answered with a 9-0 run of their own to take the lead. Kyra Burcham stopped the bleeding a bit by hitting a bucket with 1:30 to go in the first quarter to give the Blazers a 10-9 lead going into the second quarter. The Blazers stretched their lead to five with 6:00 to...

Top Story Pic
TOPEKA - A concept paper submitted today by the State of Kansas seeks a waiver from the federal government so it may begin its efforts to reform the state's Medicaid system.

"The Section 1115 Waiver will allow us to move forward with implementing some of the changes to the Medicaid system. This is the first step of many towards improving the health outcomes of Kansans while bending the cost curve of Medicaid down over time," Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer, M.D. said.

Dr. Colyer said the State is asking the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for a two-track waiver approach. In the first track, the State will work with CMS to implement the State's integrated care system model, KanCare, by 2013. In the second, separate track, the State seeks to begin discussions with CMS to implement a future global waiver to maximize flexibility in administering an...

Congressman Yoder's Response to the State of the Union

Press Release on Jan. 25th, 2012

Top Story Pic
Washington, DC- President Obama spoke in front of a joint session of Congress and gave his third State of the Union address. Shortly after, Kansas Congressman Kevin Yoder delivered the following response to the President's speech. Excerpt: "Earlier tonight, I had the pleasure of witnessing the President give his annual State of the Union address. As we work towards bi-partisan solutions to our nation's challenges, I was eager to hear the direction our President intends to take our country.   Unfortunately, tonight I believe the President missed a valuable opportunity to demonstrate a unifying vision for our nation by once again seeking to divide the American people.   I agree with the President that we need an economy built to last. But with a suffocating national debt of over 15 trillion dollars that continues to grow by the second and millions of Americans out of work, it's...

Along with a runner-up finish at the 2012 Spring Hill Invitational Basketball Tournament, the Gardner-Edgerton Trailblazers also had two players named to the All Tournament team. Senior Tanner Webb and junior Kyle Huppe were both awarded with All Tournament honors after the championship game.  "Kyle and Tanner provide us with some veteran leadership on and off the court. "Both kids give us excellent perimeter threats, and I believe that they continue to grow in their ability to be more creative and successful in terms of penetration, finishing inside, and creating shots for teammates. The two combined also give us solid late game free...

Johnson County Asked to Form Edgerton Cemetery District

Press Release on Jan. 23rd, 2012

Top Story Pic
Maintenance of the Edgerton Cemetery is becoming a financially grave issue for the Edgerton Cemetery Association.
The non-profit association of volunteers has been operating and taking care of the cemetery for more than a century, but maintaining the grave sites, including mowing and repairing tombstones, needs a new source of revenue to avoid the possibility of the 154-year-old cemetery falling into a state of neglect and disrepair.
Setting up a cemetery district is a rare occurrence since Johnson County isn't in the business of maintaining cemeteries. But it does allow the formation of districts where residents pay a small amount every year in taxes to go toward cemetery upkeep.
On Thursday, January 19, the Edgerton Cemetery Association submitted a petition to the Johnson County Board of Commissioners and requested creation of a new cemetery district with taxing authority within a...
