Help Your Local Food Pantry
Posted on Oct. 27th, 2009
There is a community crisis alert for the Community Food Pantry. The pantry is nearly depleted of food for day-to-day needs, without consideration of the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets that are normally provided during the next couple of months. This pantry serves the needs of families in USD 231 and is dependent of community donations. The families are screened by the Johnson County Multi Service Center, located in Gardner, and monitored by participating representatives from the Community Coordination Council. This pantry does not benefit from any of the Harvester food drives and depends solely on our community.
Linda Rogers, Multi Service Center Director, states that the pantry serves an average of 275 families a month. Year to date, 1100 households have received food with 3200 individuals benefiting from the pantry. These households were provided either perishable food items that are stored in the pantry or issued a food voucher to cover perishable food.
What is needed? Any individual, family or organization that could gather non-perishable food or paper items that would be used in the home would be appreciated. The donation of glass items is discouraged as they break easily in transporting. This community has always been so generous in the past and our only reason for an appeal now is that we have reached a true crisis. Many of your churches, schools or organizations may already have drives in place and we thank you for your foresight. Individual and family donations can be put in blue barrels at the Gardner Price Chopper. Funds are also needed for perishable foods and checks can be made payable to the Community Food Pantry and mailed to PO Box 474, Gardner KS 66030. If you have any questions concerning your drive please contact Linda Rogers, Multi Service Director at 856-7405.
On Friday, November 6, 2009 and Sunday, November 8, 2009 there will be a trailer at the front of the Gardner Wal-Mart to accept both food items and fund donations for the Thanksgiving baskets. Food can also be delivered to the First Baptist Church on Thursday, November 19 after 11 AM. Food collected after this date will be used in Christmas baskets and to replenish the cupboards. If anyone needs assistance in the delivery of their food donations, we have volunteers in the community that are prepared to pickup and deliver the food to the Pantry. Please contract Bill Bushno 856-7371 or Gini Liveley 206-6800
Thank you for your interest in the Food Drive and continued support of our community.

I grow a garden that produces more than our family can consume. Does anyone know any place that is looking for fresh produce? It's not tons but it's squash, zuccini, cucmbers, peppers, and soon to be tomatoes. I would rather give it to someone that needs it than put it in my compost.
