Gardner Public Safety would like to offer information regarding your vehicle and suggest some tips to help keep you and your vehicle safe during this winter driving season.
With temperatures expected to drop below freezing:
• Lock your vehicle but make sure that you have an extra key to be able to get back into your vehicle. Gardner Public Safety has seen an increase in vehicle lockouts during the cold weather and it is becoming increasingly difficult to gain access into the vehicles. So far this season, we have not experienced any vehicles being stolen while “warming up”, but in the northeastern cities of Johnson County they have seen this occurring more frequently.
When you have to park your vehicle outside:
• Remember to clear all of your vehicle windows and lights before driving. Gardner Public Safety has investigated a few vehicle accidents that were caused by drivers not having a clean, unobstructed view of the roadway. The Kansas Standard Traffic Ordinance states: “No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any material upon the front windshield, side wings, side or rear windows of such vehicle which substantially obstructs, obscures or impair the driver’s clear view of the highway.”
