Once again runners from across America are heading to Olathe, KS to commemorate the tragic events that took place on 9/11/01. The annual Patriots’ Run is being held at MidAmerica Nazarene University, Olathe, KS. The theme of the event is “To Thank and Honor Those Who Serve Our Country.” As always, while the event is a commemoration of those lost, it is a CELEBRATION of their lives and of those who work to protect our communities and country.
During the 9 hours and 11 minutes of the event, runners and walkers can choose to run a 5K, half marathon, marathon, ultra-marathon, casual run/walk or join a team. In the casual division runners can start and stop at any time they wish and run as many laps as they wish. All races are on a one-mile loop on the campus of MidAmerica Nazarene University. This is an event for any runner or walker of any skill level. However, the ultra-marathon event record is 63 miles, set by Gregg Buehler in 2011.
Area families who lost loved ones will be there to celebrate the lives of those who were killed in the attacks. The family of Ron Hemenway, who died in the Pentagon, will participate with the Gold Star Mothers. The family of Randy Drake, who died from his injuries outside the Twin Towers, will have a team running and walking the entire 9 hours and 11 minutes.
On 9/10/16 the Olive Garden and Sam’s Club are hosting the runners and community members for a pasta dinner and program at the Kansas Army National Guard Armory in Olathe, KS. The community is welcome to come enjoy the program. Reservations are required and the cost is just $9.11.
