Blazer JV Football Drops a Tight Game with Mill Valley
by Jason Radel
The Blazers kicked off their football season last night with the JV squad traveling to Mill Valley. The Blazers defense came out with a purpose not allowing the Jaguars to move the ball. Vincent Souidaray and AJ Rodriquez set the tone for the defense with big play after big play. The defense helped the offense with good field position, and behind the running of freshman tailback Drew Cassida the Blazers would jump out to a 14-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half the offense struggled to move the ball, and the defense found it’s own struggles, allowing Mill Valley to get back into the game. Mill Valley would attack the Blazers with blitzes on defense, and a balanced passing/running attack on offense. This allowed them to take a 17-14 lead in the 3rd quarter.
The Blazers fought back behind an outstanding defensive performance by Jackson Curbow. Curbow intercepted his second pass of the night and returned it to the Mill Valley 15 yard line. On the next play Drew Cassida would find the end-zone for the third time. Unfortunately it was brought back by a holding penalty. Unfazed by the penalty Tyler Goetzmann would connect with Laine Meyer on the very next play to put the Blazers back on top 21-17 with 4 minutes left in the game.
Mill Valley then put together a long drive and would take the lead for good. The Blazers came up short losing it 21-24. The boys will be back in action next Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas at 6 pm.
Be sure you come out and support the Varsity this Friday at 7 pm as they host St. Thomas Aquinas her at GEHS!!
