Five GEHS Seniors named as Kade Meyer Memorial Scholarship Recipients

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of family and friends, as well as, the overwhelming success of the Kade Meyer Celebration Run held in Gardner, KS each September, five outstanding graduating students have been named as the 2016 Kade Meyer Memorial Scholarship recipients. Each of the following 2016 graduating students have earned a one-time scholarship of $3,000.00

The first recipient is Gage Bacon.  Gage is the son of Courtney Franz, Math Teacher at GEHS. Gage plans to attend UMKC or KU to major in Biochem Engineering.

The second recipient is Hailey Drawbaugh.  Hailey is the daughter of Deborah Drawbaugh, Paraprofessional at Pioneer Ridge Middle School.  Hailey plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Biology.

The third recipient is Hunter Fretz.  Hunter is the son of  Jenny Fretz-Edwards, Reading Teacher at Gardner Elementary. Hunter plans to attend Kansas State University majoring in Construction Science Management

The fourth recipient is Grant Hansen. Grant is the son of Angela Hansen, Computer Teacher at Pioneer Middle School. Grant plans to attend the University of Kansas.

The final recipient is Abigail Lane.  Abigail is the daughter of Annette Lane, Fourth Grade Teacher at Sunflower Elementary. Abigail plans to attend Kansas State University, majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Kade Meyer lost his life at the precious age of 7½ in September, 2010, when he was killed by a car outside of his elementary school.  Kade was a happy, healthy, fun loving and compassionate little boy who always had a smile on his face.  Together with friends and family, the Meyer family established the Kade Meyer Memorial Scholarship to assist students needing financial support for their education after high school. An annual scholarship will be awarded to a GEHS senior(s) in Kade’s memory through the class of 2021, which would have been Kade’s graduation year. Counting this year, 21 Gardner-Edgerton High School graduating Seniors have received a total of $69,000.00 in scholarship money since 2011.

The 6th Annual Kade Meyer Celebration Run will be held on September 17, 2016, at Celebration Park in Gardner, Kansas.  It includes a 5k and 10k, as well as a Kids 1-Mile Fun Run. This community event is open to the entire community for children and adults of all ages and registration for this event is now open at All proceeds from the Kade Meyer Celebration Run directly benefit students of the Gardner-Edgerton School District.
