Inmate Dies at Johnson County Jail

Johnson County, KAN. – An inmate at the Johnson County Detention Center – Central Booking Facility was found dead early Sunday morning.

Gary McCormick, 59, was found unresponsive in his cell at 4:51 a.m. while detention staff was conducting a routine welfare check of the inmates.  Life-saving efforts were initiated by Johnson County Detention Center staff and in-house medical staff.  Olathe Fire Department, and Johnson County Med-Act responded to assist.  Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.

McCormick was housed alone and had been incarcerated since July 2015 awaiting trial on charges of Rape, Aggravated Criminal Sodomy, Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, and Felony Fleeing and Eluding.  He had a bond of $1,000,000.

This is an on-going investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
