Do the words, “vocational passion” conjure up any meaning for you? With all of the employment and financial turmoil currently inundating us, shouldn’t we content ourselves with any job regardless of its shortcomings? Let us speculate for a moment that a better fitting job is not merely superior in an employment context. We spend much—if not most—of our time and energy working. So a rewarding vocation finds us happier in our work lives and personal lives. Just as a frustrating job can sap our personal energy and passion, the personal benefits from a well fitting job spill over into all aspects of our lives.
Vocational passion ties into who we are as a person. The unique personality combinations that make us ourselves also point us towards (and away) from certain occupations. Having an initial understanding of one’s personality is an important starting point for career coaching. Realizing what your personality preferences are provides a general direction for employment possibilities. Speaking in general terms, the personal preferences associated with being an accountant can differ greatly from the preferences of a sales representative. While one personality may not be more “right” or more “wrong” for any particular occupation, it is fair to say that one’s preferences generally fit better into some job types rather than others.
Our passions are comprised of anything that creates enthusiasm or strong interest in us. After gaining an understanding of what aspects fit our personality and passions, we can begin developing a plan to find a vocation that fits—or better describes—who we are.
