  Edgerton, Kan. Report of the Thursday, May 10, 2012 meeting. Park and Recreation The Edgerton City Council spent considerable time debating the options and opportunities for expansion of Park and Recreation programming for Edgerton residents. Discussion covered areas including the viability of competitive leagues, recreational activities, staff requirements and opportunities for youth employment as umpires and concession stand workers. The City established a Park and Recreation Committee in 2009, due to lack of participation in Park and Recreation sponsored events, the members of the Committee resigned earlier this month. The Council discussed the need for an intern or paid staff to organize and promote Park and Recreation events. Although no final decisions were made, discussion focused upon the creation of leagues for young players in baseball, football and soccer. The Council...

Willard helps push Blazer into finals

The Blazer took on Blue Valley West in the first round of the State reginoal tournament at the College Blvd Activites Center Wednesday afternoon.  The winner would advance to the finals to face the winner between Olathe East and Shawnee Mission North.
 
BVN took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after getting the first two out in the inning. The next batter then hit a line drive to right field that barely skimmed off the glove of Britanee Willard that led to a two out triple. The next batter then took the next pitch up the middle to score the run. Willard would get her revenge later in the game.
 
The Blazers had a hit in every inning but were unable to score a run until the sixth inning when Jackie Sylva led the inning off with a single, then advanced to third on Ashleigh Perry's single. Morgan Buie then hit into a sacrafise that scored Sylva to make the score...

Washington, DC - Congressman Kevin Yoder made the following statement today after the House Appropriations Committee passed the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2013. The legislation includes $75 million for the construction of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, KS., and received broad bipartisan support. Representative Yoder is the lone Kansan on the House Appropriations Committee. The Homeland Security bill will come before the full House in the coming weeks.

Post Season for the Blazer Softball

The Lady Blazer softball team start their state playoff run today at the College Blvd Atheltic Complex locted at 107th and College.
 
The Blazers had a slow start to the season with a 1-7 start, but have won 10 of the last 12 games to make them one of the hostest teams in the playoffs. Gardner Edgerton is ranked #7 and will take on #6 Blue Valley West. The two teams met in week two of the season as the BVW won both games 6-3.
 
If the Blazers win, they will play the winner between #1 Olathe East (19-1) -v- #12 Shawnee Mission North (3-12) at 6:45.
 
 
The Blazer Broadcast Network will have complete coverage starting at 2:45 with the Cherry Berry Pre-game show.

Breaking News: School Bus involved in accident on 56 Highway

JOHNSON COUNTY, KANSAS -- A spokesman from the Johnson County Sherrifs Department has confirmed that a School Bus was involved in a multi-car accident at approximately 4:00 pm today. This accident which involved 3 other vehicles, occurred just southwest of 191st Street & US 56 Highway. Nobody on the bus was injured, which included approximately 40 students. An ambulance was called to the scene to attend to the minor injuries of the drivers of the other 3 vehicles. The students where transported onto another bus for delivery to their destinations. On May 12, 2012 officers with the Lawrence Police Department were contacted regarding a missing person. Friends and family report Yelekal Alemu (known as “Kal”) has not been seen since the morning of May 12, 2012 and has failed to show up for important family gatherings. Mr. Alemu’s vehicle was located later that evening in rural Douglas County, southeast of Lawrence. At this time Mr. Alemu’s whereabouts are unknown. Below are two photographs of Mr. Alemu, who now has short hair and a full beard. Young Gardner Gold Team Excels at Metro Track Meet

With only two returning members from last year’s squad, the Gardner Gold Special Olympics team turned in an impressive performance at the Metro track meet at Blue Valley Northwest High School on Saturday May 5th. Ten team members earned a grand total of 42 medals, which includes 17 gold medals, 14 silver medals, 4 bronze medals, 5 4th place medals, and 2 5th place medals. Topeka - In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down on Tuesday, May 15th in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
“The officials that provide for public safety in our towns, communities, roads and highways deserve our respect and recognition. They do difficult jobs in often dangerous circumstances, and some have made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities,” said Governor Brownback.
National Peace Officers Memorial Day was established in 1961 to recognize local, state and federal law enforcement and peace officials.

C.J. Hall Signs With Fort Scott

Gardner-Edgerton senior C.J. Hall has signed to play basketball with Fort Scott Community College.  Hall was part of the 2010 Trailblazer squad that took 3rd in the 5A KSHSAA state tournament as a sophomore. As a junior, Hall saw an increase in playing time and his inside game was a major part of a Trailblazer squad that finished as the sub-state runner-up. Hall's senior year included a 3rd place finish in the Eastern Kansas League and a runner-up finish at the midseason Spring Hill Invitational.  Along with an ability to score both inside and outside the paint, Head Coach Jeff Langrehr has credited Hall for helping to provide open three-point shots for the team's guards. 
The 6'5" forward will now move on to play for the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds in Fort Scott, Kansas. Hall played in an All-Star Game for area seniors hosted by Fort Scott Community...
