Wheelbarrow Questions?? Call your local Master Gardener from the Johnson County Extension Office.
Spring is just around the corner and one sure sign of its arrival is the opening of the Johnson County KState Research and Extension Master Gardener Hotline. The phone hotline is open March through October from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays. The service is free. The direct number is (913) 715-7050. Questions also can be submitted by email at garden.help@jocogov.org.

The Extension Master Gardener (EMG) program is sponsored by Johnson County K-State Research and Extension. The Extension Master Gardener program is entering its 30th year of service to area residents. Extension Master Gardener volunteers receive horticultural training in preparation for working the Hotline, as well as many other projects sponsored by the organization.

When contacting the Hotline for assistance, callers should be prepared to supply as much information as possible. The more data provided, the easier it is for the trained volunteer to assist. In addition to calling the Hotline, personal visits with plant samples are encouraged. Seeing samples can, in many cases, makes diagnosing the horticulture problem easier.

If bringing a sample to the Johnson County Extension Office, 11811 Sunset Drive, Suite 1500, Olathe, be sure to bring a large enough sample. This means a branch 1 to 2 feet in length, a piece of sod the size of a Frisbee or several leaves.

Samples that are completely dead are not as useful as samples of plants that are just beginning to show symptoms. Not all questions or problems have an easy answer or solution, but Extension Master Gardeners will make every attempt to help. In addition to their personal knowledge, they also have a wealth of information at their fingertips.

As part of Kansas State University, Extension has a network of resources available. Numerous informational fact sheets, an extensive library and electronic technology assist in helping to find practical solutions.
