The recall election is over. The voters of Gardner have recalled two City Council members. Many residents have been wondering what happens next.
Melissa Mundt, Gardner's Assistant City Administrator/Public Information Officer, issued the following statement. "The City has been asked about the process to seat the City Council without a quorum. The remaining three Council Members and the Mayor will meet per schedule on March 15th. At that time, Kansas State Law allows them to open the meeting and then the Mayor must immediately convey his appointment to bring the number of seated members to a quorum. No other business can be conducted until that appointment has been consented to by the remaining Council. Mayor Drovetta will be working on a process to select appointments and will announce that process as soon as possible."
So there will be no Gardner City Council work meeting on Monday, March 8. The March 15 Gardner City Council meeting will be important. This meeting is, as usual, open to the public. GardnerEDGE will immediately post the names the new Council members for the benefit of those unable to attend the meeting.
Look to GardnerEDGE for information regarding the Mayor's selection and/or interview process. As soon as that information is made available, we will post it.

did not even bother to vote in Tuesday's election, do you really think they will be bothered to listen to you Drovetta on their day off?????? The only people who might even show up will be the Beasley lynch mob, Chamber members and other special interests who are always around with their hand out who have worked so hard for this APPOINTED council to come into being.

Mayor Drovetta invites you to an impromptu Town Hall meeting on Saturday, March 6th at 10 a.m. to discuss the upcoming appointment process to fill the two vacant seats on the Gardner City Council. The Town Hall meeting will be held at City Hall.
The Mayor will be able to answer questions and discuss the process. He will also be discussing the process for the first appointment due to the need to have a quorum to conduct the business at the next regular City Council meeting March 15th.

So...for timing, is this how it works?
I assume that the 1st appointment will be for John's seat with just over a year remaining? That would be voted on immediately by the 3 remaining council members. The selected person would be sworn in right then. City business could procede.
Then the 2nd seat will be for Mary's seat with just over 3 years remaining. That appointment could then be voted on by the legitimate quorom of 4 council members that day or at a later date, after more time for review.
