Johnson County Emergency Management & Homeland Security, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, will be testing the outdoor warning siren system on March 9th at 1:30 PM. While the outdoor warning siren system is typically tested on the first Wednesday of every month at 11:00 AM, the March test date and time has been changed to coincide with Severe Weather Awareness Week which is March 8-12.
“Severe Weather Awareness Week is a week of emphasis for us,” said Nick Crossley, Director of Johnson County Emergency Management & Homeland Security, “It is a unique opportunity to work with local, regional, and State partners to profile efforts to prepare our community for the upcoming severe weather season.”
These efforts include public education related to the role and importance of the outdoor warning siren system, NOAA all-hazard weather radios, emergency alert systems, text notification, social media, and traditional media as part of a citizen’s comprehensive warning strategy.
Johnson County Emergency Management & Homeland Security is also offering the Severe Weather Awareness Seminar Series March 8-11. It will focus on organizations and businesses that have a unique vulnerability to severe weather. More information about this program can be found at www.jocoem.org/cit/swaw.shtml.
