Gardner Library caters to young skateboarding patrons
Posted on May. 14th, 2010
In Gardner there are many youth from the middle school that come to the Gardner Library, 137 E. Shawnee Street, Gardner, KS after school. They use skateboards for transportation which creates issues with skateboards being left anywhere and everywhere in the library and presents some hazards. Just like you wouldn’t want to leave your bike unlocked outside, skateboarders don’t want to leave their boards unattended outside.
Knowing that the skateboarders want to keep their boards with them, the Gardner staff decided to investigate alternatives. Skateboard racks were discovered and it was decided to purchase one. The Library Facilities department installed it inside (see photo) because the boarders do want to keep an eye on their boards. The staff realized the importance of securing the boards to avoid theft. Since boarders don’t have the opportunity to lock their boards up in most public places, they don’t carry locks. Gardner Library provides the locks for checkout at the circulation desk.
Recently the staff conducted a skateboard deck design contest. Six winners were selected to come back and paint their designs onto real skateboard decks.
