Olathe Medical Center receives Cancer Care Accreditation
Posted on Jun. 24th, 2010
The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted a three-year accreditation with commendation to the cancer program at Olathe Medical Center (OMC).
OMC received the accreditation following an on-site evaluation of the cancer program, including cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.
“Our hospital is doing a fabulous job,” said Stephen Smalley, MD, radiation oncologist at OMC and chairman of OMC’s Cancer Committee. “Each step of our cancer program is performing at the highest level on a national platform. It is very encouraging.”
The Commission on Cancer is a national program dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and monitoring of care.
Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of its performance.
The Cancer Committee at OMC gathers specialists from all areas throughout its cancer program, including oncologists, surgeons, pharmacists, nurses, and administrators, among others, to look at program components and then research, evaluate and develop new initiatives.
OMC's cancer program provides a multidisciplinary approach to care and offers patients access to innovative treatment options and the latest in cancer treatment technology.
Specialists in radiation oncology, medical oncology and surgical oncology offer a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment that addresses the unique needs of individual patients.
Additional help for patients and those who care for them is provided through a wealth of preventive, educational and support resources at the medical center.
