New Century Fieldhouse Opening Soon
Posted on May. 5th, 2011
The NCAA College Basketball tournament may be over, but the season is just starting for amateur basketball teams that travel around the country competing in tournaments.
Right next door to Gardner in New Century AirCenter is a new multi-purpose facility constructed for Johnson County Parks and Recreation District that will play host to some of these tournaments beginning in June 2011. New Century Fieldhouse is located at 551 New Century Parkway at Stone Creek Drive, just west of the CenturyLink campus north of US 56.
This modern 88,000 square-foot LEED-certified building is an athletic venue divided into two main areas. One side will be a 100' x 190' regulation-size soccer field surfaced with Astroturf.
The other side of the building will consist of four full-length basketball courts with space for eight volleyball courts. Futsal, a variant of indoor soccer played with a smaller ball with less bounce, will also be played on the hardwood basketball courts. No matter how it is configured for games, all courts will have electronic scoreboards.
The core area of the building will house a new reception area, administration offices, restrooms, elevator, and two concession areas. The upper level mezzanine will have a concession with lounge area and flat screen TVs, an observation/seating area and four party suites with court and field views. There will also be a larger multi-purpose room to be used mainly for meetings.
This facility should provide a great opportunity for local basketball, volleyball and futsal leagues to reach out to local and national organizations to bring tournaments to our area, which could also boost our local economy.
The grand opening of the New Century Fieldhouse is scheduled for Monday, June 11, 2011, from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Other JCPRD activities are scheduled to begin at the facility the week of May 9. For more information, visit: http://jcprd.com/activities/ http://jcprd.com/activities/
The main entrance is on the west side of the building, where the majority of 529 parking spaces are accessed off Stone Creek Drive. Gardner residents can take Lincoln Lane east from North Moonlight Road two blocks to Stone Creek Drive, then north 1/4-mile past the Sherwin-Williams Paint Store to the Fieldhouse.
