Lightning Rod SCAM

Posted on Sep. 30th, 2011
T.R.A.C.E.
The Kearny County Sheriff's Department in Lakin, Kansas is investigating a lightning rod scam. A 90 year old woman living alone on a rural farmstead was contacted on February 2, 2010 by a crew offering to install a copper lightning protection system. She wrote the crew two checks from her bank in the amounts of $9850 and $14050. One amount was for parts and equipment and the other was for labor and installation. The lightning protection system consisted of braided copper cable connecting copper rods with red glass-like globes, and a ground wire. The woman estimated that installation took about thirty minutes.

On September 8, 2011, the same crew recontacted the woman and inspected the lightning protection system. One member of the crew showed the woman a red globe reportedly removed from one of the rods. It was misshapen and the male said that this was an indicator of a lighting strike. The crew offered to service the system and was ultimately paid $18000 by check for the service. On both occasions, the woman's check was immediately taken to her bank and cashed.

There is also a similar investigation underway by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation in Scott County, Kansas.
