Joint Chiefs of Staff Deputy Chaplain to Speak at MNU Commencement

Commander Brian D. Weigelt, CHC, USN a deputy chaplain for the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon will be the speaker at MNU’s 43rd Commencement ceremonies May 3 and 4, 2014. He is a 1993 graduate of MNU with a bachelor’s degree in business and psychology.
OLATHE, Kan.,-- Commander Brian D. Weigelt, CHC, USN a deputy chaplain for the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon will be the speaker at MNU’s 43rd Commencement ceremonies May 3 and 4, 2014. Weigelt is a 1993 graduate of MNU with a bachelor’s degree in business and psychology.

Having served as a Navy Reserve Chaplain for several years, Chaplain Weigelt volunteered for active duty in 2003. His assignments would include deployment to Iraq, serving at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, and serving as Deputy Command Chaplain, Senior Protestant Chaplain, and Command Chaplain, at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Africa. In September 2013, he was promoted to the rank of Commander and began his duties as Deputy Joint Staff Chaplain at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.

Weigelt was named the United States Marine Corps Chaplain of the Year by the Navy Chief of Chaplains in 2005, and in July 2006, he became a Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, and various other campaign and service awards.

Weigelt was raised on a family farm in North Dakota. After graduating from MNU he was ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene in August 1997. In May 1999, he graduated from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo., earning the Master of Divinity. In 2012, he completed a Master of Arts in national security and Strategic Studies at the United States Naval War College.

Weigelt and his wife Rosslyn, a 1996 graduate of MNU, are the parents of a daughter, Eliza, age 11.

May 3 is the ceremony for Professional and Graduate Studies graduates which includes the associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, four graduate degree programs and two post-graduate certificate programs. The ceremony for traditional undergraduates is May 4. Approximately 780 candidates will participate in Commencement exercises between the two ceremonies.
