She was born Sally Martha Schmidt on March 19, 1932 to Theodore (Ted) Albert Schmidt and Martha (Martie) Marguerite Sothman Schmidt in Anselmo, Nebraska. As a child, Sally experienced the challenges of the dust bowl, as well as the debilitating effects of polio. Her family moved several times in search of work, settling in DeSoto, Kansas in 1941. Her parents and brother encouraged in her a kind heart, a constant love of learning, and a sense of adventure. These qualities were a part of Sally throughout her life. She was always optimistic, supportive and sought out the positive in all people and situations. After graduating DeSoto High School in 1950, Sally married her high school sweetheart, Archie Lee Bedford, Jr. on October 19, 1951. They were married 67 years, during which time Sally earned an Associate’s Degree from Johnson County Community College (’94), was an organist for the DeSoto United Methodist Church (40 years), taught piano lessons (30 years), delivered Meals on Wheels (17 years) and earned the esteemed PHTC (put husband through college) Award. She also was a member of the Eastern Star of DeSoto, DeSoto VFW Auxiliary, “The Hungry’s” and the “Tuesday’s Card Club”. Sally worked for the DeSoto school district as a secretary for Woodsonia Elementary, Sunflower Elementary, DeSoto High School, and the DeSoto District Office. For a number of years she lived with her family in California, but also travelled through Europe, North Africa, and most of the United States (usually with camping gear). She always loved places near the ocean the best.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Archie; brother, Charles “Bub” (LaDonna) Schmidt; five children: Danita Bedford, Brenda (Darrell) Sampson, David (Darlene) Bedford, Sr., Brent (Yvette Rowe) Bedford, and Doug (Kim) Bedford and grandchildren: Amy (Bill) Holzhueter, Shana Nicole (Bo) Nelson, Jesse Bedford, Abe Sampson, Adam Sampson, Megen Bedford, David Bedford, Jr., Kayla Bedford, Alexis Bedford, Paden Bedford, Josie Bedford, Ron Rowe and Ryan Rowe.
