Shirley Eileen Reiss, 80, Spring Hill, Kansas passed away Monday, October 7, 2019 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 14, 2019 with a visitation before the service beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Bruce Funeral Home, 712 S. Webster, Spring Hill, Kansas 66083 (913-592-2244). Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, Spring Hill, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Meade Church of the Nazarene, Alzheimer’s Association or Spring Hill Care and Rehabilitation. Condolences may be left at brucefuneralhome.com

Shirley was born on April 3, 1939 in rural Loyal, Oklahoma to Orville Guy Francis and Mollie Ruth (Honeycutt) Pope. She graduated from Loyal High School, Loyal, Oklahoma and Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma. Shirley enjoyed playing softball in high school and college. Her high school team won the state championship for three consecutive years and was runner-up her senior year. While at Central State College, Shirley played semi-pro women’s softball. Shirley was an active member of the Baptist Student Union. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and left Oklahoma for a teaching job in Meade, Kansas. While in Meade, she married Norman Reiss but later divorced. She left teaching to raise her daughters. Shirley worked as the secretary and custodian of Meade Church of the Nazarene in Meade, Kansas for more than 25 years. Shirley moved to Spring Hill in 2010 to be close to family. She was known as a hard worker and was very involved with her church. She enjoyed watching her TV shows, especially football and golf and she absolutely loved her gummy bears! Shirley reminded the Spring Hill Care and Rehabilitation staff daily that she was praying for them.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and sister Wahneta Stebens. She is survived by her daughters Karen Finney (Jeff), Spring Hill, Kansas and Linda McDonald (Marc), Emporia, Kansas; brothers Vernon Pope, Edmond, Oklahoma and Jerry Pope, Woodward, Oklahoma; and three grandchildren: Braden, Landon and Sarah.
