No one knows yet how the recall election will end. We may or may not have a change in the Gardner City Council. The City of Gardner, however, has most definitely changed. Many, many residents will never again take local politics for granted. Residents who had no interest in politics have become activists. Many people have expanded both their comfort zones and their circles of friends.
These are positive changes.
Not all changes have been positive, however. Some long-standing friendships have been fractured. There has been a fair amount of trash-talk, and some of it will continue. We all know some folks whose nature is to hold onto and feed every slight, every grudge. They feed on conflict, and will want to keep fanning the fire. It's not about the opinions they hold, but how they express them.
We must all remember that the Recall has been about actions, not personalities. And everyone involved, from both sides, has gotten involved because of their deep concern and love for our community. We may not agree with the actions taken by others, but should not be so arrogant as to think that they're motivated by a lesser cause.
The recall ends today. Let's let the controversy end today also. Whichever 'side' is victorious in the election, we've all won if we come out of this a stronger community. Its our decision to make. Our community has a lot going for it. Let's pull together and move forward.
AMEN!!!
Now the healing must begin. My hope is that this will again become the close knit community that it once was. I grew up here and this past 4 years has been the most heartbreaking times of my life.
