The longest day of the summer (as in time between sunup and sundown) is the summer solstice. This year, the solstice fell on Monday, June 21. We’ll lose just a bit of daylight every day now till the winter solstice – December 21.

Feeling the need to make the most of what’s left of summer? (School starts in 7 weeks; Labor Day is in 10 weeks.) Johnson County Parks & Rec is doing their best to help you maximize this summer’s memory-making opportunities.

Ernie Miller Nature Center is hosting ‘Snakes Alive’ at 7:00 pm on Friday, June 25. If you love snakes, this is obviously an event you don’t want to miss. Scared to death of them? Then you really need to attend! Learn more about our legless-reptile friends. The presentation lasts about an hour, and is a great deal at $2.50/person (ages 2 & under are free).

Be part of the Great American Campout at Shawnee Mission Park this weekend. The fee is $20/adult, $15 children, free/3 & under, but that fee includes marina & beach passes, pedal boat rental, and tickets to the Theater in the Park production of Annie! The ‘Campout’ starts at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon, and wraps up at 10:00 am on Sunday.

Prefer your fishing boat to a pedal boat? Shawnee Mission Park has an event for you, too! This Saturday, June 26, is also overnight fishing at SMP. Anglers ages 16-64 need a valid Kansas fishing license, a County fishing permit, and appropriate boat tags. Call Community Relations at 913-894-3362 with any questions.
