Letter to the Editor: Air Show Appreciation

Posted on Jul. 19th, 2010
I had the privilege of attending the CAF Air Show yesterday at NewCentury. The event was very well organized and educational. The staff was extremely professional and helpful.

I appreciated the opportunity that was given to my friend Dan Gilyeat to speak to the crowd about www.OperationPayback.org and his passion to help our Veterans. Dan is the Marine who lost his leg in Iraq and was walking 26 days later out encouraging other wounded soldiers. ABC's Extreme Makeover-Home Edition built a new home for Dan and his family in Kansas City, Kan., and Dan wants to do everything he can to help others because of the second chance at life he was given.

On July 3, the fifth anniversary of losing his leg, Dan started walking 513 miles in 26 days to raise money to help veterans. The theme for OperationPayback.org is 26 days, 1 leg, 513 miles because of Dan's definition of a vet in John 15:13 that says "no greater love has anyone than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

It has been inspiring to watch this amazing man's dedication to serve. He is walking about 20 miles each day on a prosthetic leg that doesn't fit right and causes pain, but that is not stopping him from continuing to serve his country. Dan is also running for the 3rd Congressional District, but has actively been putting his time and fundraising primarily into OperationPayback. You can visit www.OperationPayback.org for many inspirational videos and photos. Americans need positive news like this to feel good again.

Why can't an Air Show simply be an Air Show?
