• The City of Olathe is hosting their last free summer concert of the 2010 season on Friday evening. The Beatles tribute band Liverpool will take the stage at 7:00 pm at Frontier Park, 15501 Indian Creek Parkway. This particular concert is unique in that organizers hope to set a new Guinness World Record by having over 5300 concert goers play ‘Hey Jude’ on kazoos for at least five minutes.
And if the chance to participate in a world record doesn’t motivate you, try this – TLC for Families and Children, an Olathe based not-for-profit organization serving children who have been victimized or are in crisis, will benefit directly from this event. Farmers Insurance is donating the kazoos. TLC volunteers will be on hand to distribute and accept donations for the kazoos. Suggested donations are $2 per kazoo, $5 for three kazoos and $10 for seven. 100% of the proceeds will go to TLC. Your family will never forget playing 'Hey Jude' on kazoo in order to help children in need.
• K-State Research and Extension Horticulture Center Field Day is from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Saturday at the Research Center, 35230 West 135th, Olathe, KS (approximately nine miles west of Highway 7 on 135th Street.) Admission is $5, which comes with bottled water and hourly seminars by horticulture experts. Find out which flowers, fruits and vegetables do best in Kansas, and learn the latest gardening techniques. Bring along that ailing plant for expert advice, or that unusual specimen for identification. And bring lots of questions!
• Saturday night is Movie Night in downtown Edgerton! The Edgerton Recreation and Cultural Arts Committee is presenting a double feature. Actually, they’re projecting the double feature – on the west exterior wall of the Edgerton Library! Admission is free for “The Tooth Fairy” and “The Spy Next Door”. Be forewarned – popcorn, soda and candy will be available for $0.50 each, so you may want to bring a few quarters. The first movie is scheduled to start at 8:30 pm.
There are also a couple of multi-day events this weekend:
• It’s too hot for a garage sale marathon but you’re kids are running out of clothes again. Or the kids broke the stroller. Or... Don’t miss the Sacred Heart Parish’s Kids Sale! Over 50 families have contributed to this fundraiser so, whether you’re getting your children ready for a nap or ready for college, you’re sure to find something!
The sale is being held at the Parish Center, 130 E Warren Street (2 blocks south of downtown Gardner) with all proceeds going towards the new Sacred Heart Parish Center. Sale hours are 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday, and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Sunday. (Sunday is half-price day.)
Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm is hosting an Extreme Cowboy Racing competition this weekend. Both professional and amateur riders will be participating in this event that’s more than a race, different than a rodeo, and sure to leave you wanting more! Event tickets are $12 per day. On Friday the gates will open at 3:00 pm; the racing begins at 4:00 pm. The gates open at 9:00 am on Saturday, with clinics for registered participants in the morning. The Youth division competition begins at 1:00 pm with Ride Smart Division competition at 2:30 pm and the Pro/Non-pro competition at 6:00 pm.
Have a great weekend!
