The Baldwin Bulldogs were picked by some to be a team with the potential to give Gardner-Edgerton a tough game. The Trailblazers evidently missed that memo.

The pace for the game was set early on when quarterback Bubba Starling ran for a 61-yard touchdown to put Gardner-Edgerton up 7-0. That was only 50 seconds into the game.

The rest of the evening was no different as the Trailblazers were able to give Baldwin several different looks on both sides of the ball and the Bulldogs did not seem to have an answer for any of them.

“We had to go to plan B quite a few different times and our kids, I thought, adjusted very well on the fly. I was really happy with that,” said Marvin Diener, Head Coach for the Trailblazers.
The Trailblazer offense was virtually unstoppable, scoring 49 points in the first half alone.
Starling was once again the star of the game, with 319 total yards and four total touchdowns. Starling, however, was not the only Blazer to produce offensively.

Junior running back Ryan Weber had a breakout night, rushing for 172-yards and two touchdowns. Junior Brett Jensen earned every last inch of his 50-yards and two touchdowns as he was primarily used for drives up the middle.

Wide Receiver Justice Berry was Starling’s main target when the Blazers decided to pass. Berry had 120-yards to go along with a touchdown. Juniors Alex Knorr and Tyler Stubler also each had a receiving touchdown. Overall, the Trailblazer offense racked up over 550 yards in total offense and earned 23 first downs.

“We had lots of different kids step up offensively,” said Diener, “It was really a total package again tonight.”

Not to be outdone, the Trailblazer defense also put on a show. Allowing Baldwin only five first downs while forcing three turnovers.

“Defensively we were incredible,” mentioned Diener.

The Gardner-Edgerton defense made it obvious early on that they were not going to let Baldwin have an easy night. Baldwin did not have a first down against the Trailblazers until late in the first quarter, and immediately after that play, senior linebacker Zach Watchous stopped Baldwin in the backfield for a six-yard loss.

This is the defense that had five shutouts last season while holding opponents to only 5 points per game. The defense has not given any indication that they will let up this year either.

This was the 11th consecutive league victory for the Trailblazers, who are 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play. Their next game will be at home against Paola, who is also undefeated at 2-0. The game will be on Friday, September 18th at 7:00 pm. For more coverage of the Trailblazers, check out the Quarterback Club website at www.gardneredgertonfootball.com
