BBF5k This year's Brent Bays 5k proceeds will benefit three Gardner area cancer survivors. They are, from left: Donnie Morelan, Brent Bays, and Dan Leseberg.
In spite of the persistent raindrops, the inaugural Brent Bays Foundation 5K held on Sunday at Celebration Park was a great success. Thanks to Gardner Parks and Recreation and Gardner Public Safety as well as a large crew of volunteers, the event ran smoothly.

More than 250 people, ranging from age 8 to 63, participated in the event. The overall male winner of the race was Eric Graham of Gardner, who ran the race in an incredible 16 minutes, 48 seconds. The overall female winner of the race was Sarah Armstrong Hibit of Edgerton who ran the race in an amazing 22 minutes, 59 seconds.

The Brent Bays Foundation, Inc. is an organization of volunteers whose purpose is to raise money for individuals in and around the Gardner, KS area who have been financially impacted by a battle with cancer. It was started in 2009 and received its 5013c status in 2010. The proceeds of this year’s Brent Bays Foundation event will benefit three Gardner area cancer survivors, Brent Bays, Donnie Morelan and Dan Leseberg.

Board Member and Event Organizer Maggie Truitt summarized the wonderful response of the Gardner community with these words “I would like people to know that almost everything that went into the 5K event was donated. We had very little overhead costs. We are paying for our t-shirts, but thanks to Trailblazer Tees, we are even getting those at cost. The only other thing we had to pay for is insurance, course certification, and the chip timing service. Everything else, from the bagels to the porta-potties was donated! Even our advertising was paid for by TradeNet, one of our biggest sponsors. We are very proud of the fact that all the money we have raised so far will be given away, save for these few expenses.”

In the picture is Donnie, Brent and JAY Leseberg. It's my fault that it was misprinted... The correction is Jay Leseberg, not Dan. My apologies to the family!

Thanks for the great article - it was a very moving event, and was successful because of the volunteers and the sponsors. I love this community!
