Contractor picked to construct New Century Fieldhouse

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s new indoor sports facility currently being developed near Gardner now has both a general contractor and a permanent name.
Straub Construction Co. Inc. of Shawnee was selected as the contractor, and New Century Fieldhouse will serve as the facility’s permanent name.
The district’s Board of Directors approved both items during its regular monthly meeting on July 21. Officials anticipate actual construction on the facility will begin in mid-August.
Straub’s bid of $4,221,500, which includes the base bid as well as four alternates, was selected from among 11 bids received during a bid opening on July 15.
The contract gives the contractor 175 calendar days from the date of the notice to proceed, which will be contingent upon issuance of a building permit. Wilson said District officials are hopeful that a building permit will be issued in time for a target start date of Aug. 16. On July 22, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners approved the district's conditional use permit for the project.
Plans for the facility call for using one side of the 88,000-square foot warehouse to develop a multiuse sports court area including courts for basketball, volleyball, and futsal (five-man indoor soccer).
On the other side of the building will be a 100-by-200-foot turf field that can be used for soccer, football, lacrosse, and other field sports.
Located at 551 New Century Parkway, the New Century Fieldhouse was acquired by the district in late March and is being fast-tracked for a tentative opening in early 2011

I hope there are plans embedded for our special needs population to be engaged in regular "fun" physical activity. Don't forget about us....
